Bear River winds through the western portion of this 1970 Idaho landscape, carving through the valley floor beneath the Caribou Range. This area of Bear Lake County demonstrates a classic Western industrial and transit corridor where the Union Pacific railroad tracks and a significant pipeline parallel the river's course. Evidence of local extraction is visible at the Ship Mine in the northern gulches and several Gravel Pits concentrated near the rail line.

Settlement is sparse, anchored by the small station at Manson and the high point of Georgetown Summit. The terrain transitions from the water-rich Nounan Valley in the south to the rugged, canyon-scored eastern slopes of the Caribou National Forest. Numerous natural springs, such as Big Canyon Spring, and small bodies of water like Swan Lake provide the necessary hydrology for the region's livestock and forest lands during this era.
