In the early 1980s, the small settlement of Four Corners served as the primary landmark for this corner of the Black Hills region, situated near a Radio Tower on the level upland. The geography is characterized by significant topographic shifts, moving from the open flats of the Northwestern Table to prominent rises like Sweetwater Mountain and Mt Pisgah.

Canyons and draws cut through the limestone and sandstone layers, with family or descriptive names such as Horsethief Canyon and Bocott Canyon hinting at local lore. Water is sparse but essential, appearing in the courses of Salt Creek, Oil Creek, and Sweetwater Creek. This provisional survey preserves the 20th-century landscape of ranching and communication infrastructure before later developments.
