Beaverhead National Forest covers much of this high-altitude landscape in Madison County, where the Continental Divide influences the complex drainage patterns of the northern Rockies. The area is dominated by significant peaks and plateaus, including the prominent Freezeout Mtn and the expansive Lobo Mesa. Hydrological features are central to this terrain, with the Elk River and its tributaries such as the Little Elk River cutting through the western sections, while the W Fork Madison River flows along the southern edge. High-elevation water bodies like the Secret Lakes and Freezeout Lakes are situated near Grizzly Gazelle and Bogus Flat, illustrating the diverse alpine environments found here. At the southeastern corner, Raynolds Pass serves as a vital geographic marker between the distinct drainages of the Madison and Centennial systems.
