Winter Ridge dominates this high-desert landscape, rising sharply above the western shoreline of Summer Lake. The dramatic elevation change between the lake bed and the Fremont National Forest is punctuated by geological and historical markers, most notably the Old Indian Treaty Bdy which traverses the ridge line. This boundary provides a clear spatial record of 19th-century land divisions across the high plateau.

Water sources are critical to the character of this arid region, evidenced by the scattered locations of Cronin Well, Squirrel Spring, and a Flowing Well near the base of Brattain Hill. At the summit, the Lookout Tower at Fremont Point offers a vantage over the descent toward Hunter Hill Pass and the unique landform known as The Punchbowl, illustrating how early resource management and topography dictated movement through this part of Lake County.
