Burkes Garden occupies a unique geologic bowl in the mountains, a high-altitude limestone valley surrounded by the circular rim of Garden Mtn and Garden Mountain. This 1950s landscape is characterized by its self-contained agricultural character, centered around the Burkes Garden (PO) and the small cluster at Little Town. The valley floor is crisscrossed by family-named infrastructure like Crooked Litz Road and Station Spring Road, leading to local landmarks such as Gose Mill and the Thompson Cem near the northern entrance at The Gap.

South of the Tennessee Valley Divide, the terrain shifts into the heavily forested ridges of the Jefferson National Forest. Here, the drainage of the North Holston River begins near the settlement of Ceres, while the Appalachian Trail winds along the crest of Walker Mountain. This survey documents a transition from the pastoral mountain basin to the deep hollows of Six Hollow and Jacobs Hollow at the Bland and Wythe county lines.
