Gilby and the smaller settlement of Honeyford anchor this Red River Valley landscape, characterized by the extremely regular grid of section-line roads such as 31st St NE and 24th Ave NE. The town of Gilby shows its internal structure with named residential thoroughfares including Scott Ave, Prospect Ave, and Eastern Ave. A significant break in the geometric prairie occurs along the meandering path of the Turtle River, which winds through the eastern portion of the quadrangle. This 2011 survey documents a highly organized agricultural region where local aviation is supported by Cronquist Field, situated just east of the primary township. The spatial arrangement reflects a century of North Dakota's land division, where small grain farming dictates the placement of towns and transport arteries.
