This high-altitude landscape is defined by the intersection of the Beaverhead National Forest and Salmon National Forest, where a network of trails and jeep paths provides the only access to remote drainage systems like Black Canyon and Bear Creek.

The mid-1960s terrain reveals a history of mineral exploration concentrated in the southern gulches. Notable extraction sites including the Buckhorn Mine, Maryland Mine, and Commodore Mine are clustered near Eightmile Creek and Little Eightmile Creek. In the lower elevations to the southwest, the Lemhi River cuts through the valley floor, contrasted by the steep, drainage-carved slopes of Cedar Gulch and Mollie Gulch.
