Chippewa National Forest encompasses the vast majority of this landscape in Cass County, where a complex network of waterways defines the region's geography. The Leech Lake River flows through the northern reaches, connecting with Mud Lake and the prominent Goose Lake. Further south, the terrain is characterized by an intricate chain of smaller water bodies, including Upper Menton Lake, Lower Menton Lake, and the clustered Chain-O'-Lakes.

Outdoor recreation and conservation history are evident in the modern trail systems depicted. The North Country National Scenic Trl winds through the southern portion of the quadrangle, crossing near Upper Milton Lake. This long-distance trail is supplemented by numerous local access points such as the Johnson Lake Hwy Trl and a series of spurs, including Johnson Lake Spur A Trl and Johnson Lake Spur B Trl, which provide detailed passage through the dense forest and around Tasher Islands in the east.
