Grapevine Dome rises as a prominent landmark in this portion of Big Horn County, anchoring a landscape defined by the intersection of high plateaus and deep drainage systems. The northern reaches are carved by Muddy Creek, while the central and southern terrain is dominated by the extensive branching of Grapevine Creek and its major tributaries, the North Fork Grapevine Creek and South Fork Grapevine Creek. These watercourses eventually give way to the dramatic topography of the southeast, where Frozen Leg Canyon and Black Canyon descend toward the expansive waters of Bighorn Lake. Evidence of the region's ranching heritage is centered at The Forks Cow Camp, a specific point of human activity situated where the forks of Grapevine Creek converge. This 2011 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey illustrates the isolated character of this Montana high country, showing a sparse network of tracks and trails navigating between the peaks and the lake shore.
