About this map

The Rio Grande corridor north of Albuquerque is defined by an intricate network of irrigation and drainage infrastructure in the mid-1930s. Large Spanish land grants including the Alameda Grant and Elena Gallegos Grant dominate the valley landscape, where the Albuquerque Main Canal and smaller features like the Acequia Griegos manage the flow of water across the arid terrain. Transportation is anchored by the Alameda Bridge and Highway No 85, while the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad tracks run along the eastern edge of the floodplain near Hahn Station. The map illustrates a transitional period when traditional agricultural land use, evidenced by the numerous drains and laterals, coexisted with burgeoning transportation routes like the Old Albuquerque Road. On the higher ground to the west, the rugged topography is marked by the winding Arroyo De Las Calabasi as and the isolated Thompsons Windmill.
