Toledo Bend Reservoir dominates the western landscape of this Louisiana-Texas border region, where the Sabine River once flowed freely. The inundation created a complex network of inlets and points, including McCowan Bend and the residential developments at South Toledo Bend. On the Louisiana side, the land transitions from the water's edge into the managed timberlands of the Sabine National Forest, cut through by numerous drainage systems like Bayou Toro and Macelva Cr. Local history is preserved at the Toledo Cem and Scott Cem, which sit amidst a grid of rural parish roads. The settlement of Haddens remains a focal point in the eastern interior, surrounded by low-lying wetlands such as Packer Swamp and a series of small water bodies like Leland Lake and Ferguson Lake.
