The Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument dominates the western bluffs above the Snake River, preserving a world-class paleontological record within the high-desert terrain. Across the river, the settlement of Hagerman serves as a hub for the agricultural Hagerman Valley, where an intricate network of gravity-fed irrigation works like the Buckeye Ditch, Sands Ditch, and Big Bend Ditch transform the arid landscape. The area's geology is sharply defined by the Malad Gorge and the descent of Billingsley Creek toward the river.
