The Tongue River meanders through the southeastern portion of this landscape, its path defining the local drainage system that includes several named tributaries. This 2011 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey captures a region of southeastern Montana where the topography is shaped by dramatic erosion features, notably Hammond Draw and Houston Draw. These dry washes and coulees serve as the primary conduits for seasonal runoff from the surrounding high ground.
