Keweenaw National Historical Park preserves the deep mining heritage of Michigan's Copper Country, framing the industrial landscape around the northern end of Hancock. This 2014 survey documents the dense settlement patterns remaining from the copper boom, from the institutional grounds of Finlandia Univ to the nearby neighborhoods of Franklin Mine and Pewabic. The terrain transitions from the heights of Arcadian Hill down to the Keweenaw Waterway and the shores of Lake Superior. Beyond the urban centers, small rural clusters like Waasa and Paavola persist along a network of family-named roads such as Mattson Rd and Koskelas Rd. Numerous community markers, including Waasa Cem and Lakeside Cem, provide essential anchor points for genealogists tracing the Finnish and European immigrant families who settled this distinctive northern peninsula.
