Keweenaw National Historical Park preserves the complex industrial legacy of Michigan's Copper Country, where the deep-seated heritage of the Franklin Mine and surrounding copper-mining settlements remains evident in the landscape. This terrain is defined by the steep elevation change from the shores of Lake Superior and the Keweenaw Waterway up toward Arcadian Hill. The concentrated development in Hancock, home to Finlandia Univ, gives way to a network of smaller communities like Paavola, Lower Pewabic, and Boston. Local history is deeply etched into the rural sections of the quadrangle through family-named landmarks and historical sites such as Waasa Cem and Lakeside Cem. The map illustrates a landscape of recovered forest and contemporary road networks built upon the footprint of a world-class mining district, connecting the city of Houghton with the outlying northern townships.
