The Salt River cuts through the northwest corner of this Gila County terrain, carving a deep path through the Lower Corral Canyon and past The Maze Rapid. This landscape is defined by its dramatic elevation changes and numerous named canyons, such as Yankee Joe Canyon and Sedal Canyon. The area is notably sparse in human development, centered instead on the geological prominence of Haystack Butte and the Blackjack Mountains to the south.
