About this map

Leaf Lake and its interconnected western and eastern basins dominate the southern half of this Otter Tail County landscape. The 1969 field survey details a rural township pattern defined by the drainage of Willow Creek and the Leaf River, with many of the area's social centers clustered near these water bodies. Local genealogy is well-supported by the presence of three distinct burial sites: Woodland Cem in the northeast, Prairie Cem near the center, and Leaf Lake Cem to the south. The small settlement of Heinola serves as a local hub, while the surrounding countryside is dotted with markers of early 20th-century civic life, including Leaf Lake Ch and School No 135. Numerous gravel pits and a Gaging Station on the river suggest a landscape of both natural resource extraction and careful water management in the Newton township area.
