The Bogue Chitto River and Pearl River define this wet lowland landscape along the border of Mississippi and Louisiana. In the early 1980s, much of the terrain was dedicated to the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge, featuring a complex network of bayous, oxbows, and sloughs such as Ox Lot Slough and Hog Bayou. These waterways are flanked by thick swamp land, including the aptly named Devils Swamp in the southwest corner near Lock No 3.

Away from the river bottoms, the settlement of Henleyfield serves as a local hub, surrounded by family-named landmarks and cemeteries like Henleyfield Cem and McGehee Cem. Traces of former industry and transit are visible in the Old Railroad Grade and a Gravel Pit near the northern border. This survey effectively captures the transition from the upland rural communities to the untamed riverine wilderness of the Gulf Coastal Plain.
