The Lehigh River carves a deep path through Carbon County, forming the western boundary of this landscape dominated by conservation lands and the infrastructure of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension. The northern reach is anchored by the Francis E Walter Dam, while the central and southern portions are defined by the expansive Hickory Run State Park. Significant geologic interest is found at the Boulder Field and along the various ridges like Chestnut Ridge.

Settlement patterns in the 1990s show a mix of old hamlets and newer developments, from the established East Side and Irishtown to the residential Pocono Mountain Lake Estates. Industrial and recreational history is marked by a Quarry and Gravel Pit alongside numerous youth camps and forest facilities such as Camp Acahela and the Forestry Camp. The network of creeks, including Tobyhanna Creek and Hickory Run, drains this complex terrain of protected game lands and forest.
