Howard Lake serves as the central hub of this Wright County landscape, where the namesake town sits on the southern shore of the water. The surrounding area is defined by a dense concentration of wetlands and smaller basins, including Milky Lake, Taylor Lake, and Yager Lake. These water bodies are connected by drainage systems like Twelvemile Cr, which flows eastward toward Little Waverly Lake. To the north, the North Fork Crow River meanders across the top of the sheet near the settlement of Highland.
