The waters of Rend Lake dominate the southern landscape of this mid-1970s survey, illustrating a massive transition from the original river bottoms of the Big Muddy River and Casey Fork to a managed reservoir system. The creation of the Rend Lake State Wildlife Refuge and Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park transformed the region into a center for conservation and recreation, significantly altering the old footprints of Elk Prairie and Spring Garden.

Away from the new shoreline, the established agricultural and transport patterns remain visible along the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, which connects the communities of Ina, Bonnie, and Nason. Local history is preserved in numerous rural landmarks, including Cub Prairie Cem, Mason Cem, and Antioch Ch. Educational growth is marked by the campus of Rend Lake College, situated just south of the intersection of the primary rail line and the expanding reservoir waters.
