Crooked Lake straddles the international border between Ontario and Minnesota in this northern wilderness survey. The landscape is defined by the massive Hunter Island landmass and a dense network of interconnected waterways that form part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Quetico Provincial Park. Evidence of early human history and navigation is preserved through labels for Indian Pictographs near Frolic Lake and numerous marked Portage routes and Rapids that bypass turbulent waters. The topography is dominated by dramatic shorelines and elevations like Gardners Mountain, overlooking a labyrinth of bays such as Thursday Bay, Wednesday Bay, and Moose Bay. This 1980s-era mapping provides a detailed look at the pristine hydrologic systems of the Superior National Forest before modern satellite mapping became standard.
