The eastern edges of Jesup transition into the dense wetlands of the Altamaha River basin in this survey of southeast Georgia. The landscape is defined by the expansive Penholloway Swamp and a complex network of waterways, including Penholloway Creek, Little McMillen Creek, and Gardi Creek. Elevated ground is scarce, marked by named landmasses like Kentucky Island and Boyles Island that rise above the surrounding marshes.

Linear settlements and infrastructure follow the dry corridors between the wetlands, with small communities at Odessa, Gardi, and Pendarvis situated along the primary highway and rail corridor. To the northeast, the river environment becomes even more intricate with numerous oxbows and named features such as Gentles Lake, Inside Lake, and Diana Slough. Transport through this riparian corridor is facilitated by the John Henry Lane Junior Memorial Bridge, which spans the low-lying reaches near the Altamaha River.
