The Colorado River carves a massive gorge through the high plateaus of northern Arizona in this early reconnaissance work, based on triangulation and topography by the Powell Survey. The map captures a landscape defined by dramatic elevation changes, from the depths of Cataract Canyon and Shinumo Canyon to the heights of Powells Plateau and Shivas Temple. North of the river, the Kaibab Plateau and Kanab Plateau are dotted with critical water sources like Pipe Spring, Moccasin Spring, and House Rock Spring, which served as vital landmarks for early settlers and travelers in an otherwise arid expanse.
