Voyageurs National Park encompasses much of this borderland terrain, where the northern edge of Saint Louis County meets the international boundary between Canada and the United States of America. This aquatic landscape is dominated by the expanse of Rainy Lake, which is punctuated by numerous named landforms including the Three Sisters Islands, Kawawia Island, and Emerald Island. The intricate shoreline is defined by sheltered inlets like Kempton Bay and Browns Bay, while the interior island masses and peninsula areas are dotted with smaller freshwater bodies such as Shoepack Lake, Oslo Lake, and Peary Lake. The mapping reveals the complex geography of the Kempton Channel, a critical waterway for navigating between the larger lake and its southern bays. Small, distinct islands like Idle Hour Island and Blueberry Island suggest the area's long-standing use for recreation and seasonal navigation within the protected park boundaries.
