Gates of the Arctic National Park encompasses the southeastern portion of this remote Arctic landscape, where the high-elevation terrain of the Canoe Hills rises above the surrounding valleys. The hydrological network is defined by the northward-flowing Okokmilaga River, which is joined by several smaller tributaries including Pediment Cr and Coal Cr. This 2016 survey captures a wilderness area largely devoid of human infrastructure, highlighting instead the raw geological features that define the North Slope. Notable landforms like Akmaktaksrak Bluff overlook the river valley, while the presence of May Lake and the drainage of Canoe Cr illustrate the complex water systems found in this sub-arctic environment.
