The Escalante River cuts through the southern portion of this landscape, serving as a primary drainage for a network of complex canyons and mesas in Garfield County. Much of the central terrain is defined by high plateaus and designated conservation zones, including The Gulch Outstanding Natural Area and the Deer Creek Recreation Area. These protected spaces reflect the long-standing efforts to preserve the unique geological character of the region, where numerous named benches like Steep Creek Bench and Brigham Tea Bench rise above deep incisions like Long Canyon.
