The Pamunkey Indian Reservation occupies a distinct bend in the Pamunkey River at the southeastern edge of this early twentieth-century survey. The landscape is defined by the winding paths of the Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and Chickahominy River systems, which dictated the placement of early commerce and crossings. At a time when water transport still influenced local movement, the Piping Tree Ferry and Carters Landing served as vital points of transit across the Pamunkey.
