The University of Rhode Island grounds and the historic village of Kingston dominate the northeastern corner of this coastal landscape. The terrain is defined by the massive Great Swamp and its associated Wildlife Reservation, which surrounds the expansive Wordens Pond. This wetlands system is deeply tied to regional history, notably marked by the Great Swamp Fight Site on a small island within the marsh. The New York New Haven and Hartford railroad cuts through the swamp, connecting Kingston Sta to southern points.
