The Brownsmead dikes and the labyrinthine waterways of the lower Columbia River define this coastal Oregon landscape. Situated where the river meets the tide, the area is a complex network of islands and sloughs, including Karlson Island, Marsh Island, and Horseshoe Island. The settlement of Knappa serves as a gateway to these tidal channels, while the inland terrain rises sharply toward Wick iup Ridge, marked by the drainages of Big Creek and Gnat Creek.
