About this map

The Nugnualuktuk River meanders across a vast, water-heavy landscape of the Seward Peninsula in the Northwest Arctic during the mid-twentieth century. This 1950 aerial survey depicts a coastal plain dominated by an intricate network of lakes, ponds, and wetlands, where the Lane River winds through the southern reaches of the quadrangle. Aside from these primary waterways, the terrain is defined by low-lying tundra punctuated by specific surveying markers established for geographic control. Geodetic points such as Nugnua VABM 151, Cactus VABM 77, and Chuck VABM 26 provide the only named landmarks in a region devoid of roads or settlements. The drainage patterns shown here reflect the natural state of the Alaskan wilderness before significant modern infrastructure reached these remote northern latitudes.
