Freetown and the village of Kurtz anchor this mid-century survey of the rugged, forested terrain in western Jackson County. Much of the land is managed as part of the Hoosier National Forest, where a complex network of drainages including South Fork Salt Creek, Guthrie Creek, and Bee Creek carve through the hills. A notable historical feature is the dismantled railroad line that once connected these timber and farming communities, following the contours of the creek valleys.
