Rio Grande waters drive the complex irrigation network of the Mesilla Valley, where the New Mexico Texas border weaves through a landscape defined by agricultural tracts and vital water management. The community of La Union sits at the heart of this system, surrounded by an intricate grid of laterals and drains such as the West Side Drain and Deck Lateral. This mid-1990s update, based on photography from 1954 and 1991, captures the expansion of infrastructure near the Dona Ana County at Santa Teresa Airport and the concentrated education hub including Gadsden High Sch and Gadsden Middle Sch. To the east, the Refugio Tract and Colony No 1 reflect historical land divisions along the river corridor, while the western reaches transition toward Strauss and the arid higher ground of the mesa.
