Lake Des Allemands and the surrounding freshwater marshlands dominate this 1890 survey of the Louisiana wetlands. The landscape is a complex network of bayous, including Bayou Boeuf and Bayou Heron, which drain the massive Grand Prairie Des Allemands. Human settlement is confined primarily to the elevated ridges and railroad corridors, such as Vacherie in the north and the small outpost of Ewing in the south.

Transport is defined by the early expansion of the Southern Pacific Railroad near Raceland Station and the T. & P. R. R. further north. Evidence of much older habitation is noted at a specific Indian Mound along the Bayou Chactimaghan. This map captures the region before modern drainage and levee systems fully transformed the hydrological connection between Bayou Lafourche and the interior lake basins.
