About this map

Hoholitna River meanders across this interior Alaskan landscape, defining the topography of the Lake Clark D-8 quadrangle as documented in the mid-1950s. The waterway enters from the east, carving a series of tight oxbows and channels through the northern half of the sheet. In the northwest corner, Hook Creek flows into the main river, marking a significant drainage junction in an area devoid of established roads or permanent settlements at the time of the survey. The terrain is characterized by a stark transition from the complex river valleys to the rising elevations of the southern interior. The Bureau of Land Management predetermined many of the land lines shown here through photogrammetric methods, illustrating the mid-century effort to map and delineate the vast Alaskan wilderness for civil use during a period of expanding geographical data collection.
