Lake Mountain serves as a prominent landmark in this high-altitude region of the Northern Rockies, where the Lewis and Clark and Powell county lines meet. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of the North Fork Blackfoot River and its major tributary, the Dry Fork North Fork Blackfoot River. A dense network of primitive paths, including the Hobnail Tom Trail and Lake Mountain Trail, facilitates travel through the Scapegoat Wilderness and adjacent Lolo and Helena National Forests. The drainage patterns are intricate, with McDermott Creek and Lake Creek carving deep valleys between summits like Mineral Hill and Falls Point. Geologic instability is evidenced by the Big Slide north of Madison Creek, while higher elevations feature remote transit points such as Windy Pass and the level terrain of Sourdough Flats.
