Lake Waccamaw dominates the southwestern corner of this coastal plain landscape, where the eastern shoreline meets a complex network of wetlands and islands. The settlement of Wananish sits near the lake's edge, while Bolton serves as a central hub further east along the highway corridor. Between these points, the vast Green Swamp reaches across the terrain, broken only by elevated features like Hickory Island, Beech Island, and Beartrap Island.

A systematic drainage network including Line Canal and Lateral Canal D illustrates the long-standing efforts to manage water in this lowland environment. To the north, distinctive Carolina bays such as Barbecue Bay and Doehead Bay appear as elliptical depressions amidst the timberland. Scattered communities like Buckhead, Ricefield, and Goose Hollow define the northern limits near the Bladen border, while Council Ridge marks the southern approach to the lake.
