Hallsboro and Artesia anchor this low-lying landscape in Columbus County, where the transition from settlement to dense wetland defines the terrain. The northern reaches of Lake Waccamaw dominate the eastern view, fed by numerous waterways including Alligator Br and Bogue Swamp. This area was a vital corridor for travel and trade between the lake and the Waccamaw River to the south, evidenced by the cluster of small communities and the rail-oriented layout of Wananish.
