The Embarras River meanders through this portion of southeastern Illinois, where the rural landscape is defined by the intersection of four counties: Jasper, Crawford, Richland, and Lawrence. The settlement of Landes sits in the northern reaches, while Stringtown and Amity occupy the central and southern sections of the quadrangle. This area preserves a high density of ancestral burial grounds, including Old Saint Josephs Cem and Dark Bend Cem, which are often the primary remaining markers of early pioneer families in these townships.
