The Mesabi Range defines the southern portion of this landscape, a region synonymous with the iron ore industry that shaped the economy of Itasca County. The terrain is defined by a dense network of glacial lakes and wetlands, where the Prairie River meanders through the northwest, and Sucker Brook drains the southern marshes. Large water bodies such as Big Sucker Lake, Crooked Lake, and Moose Lake dominate the central topography, surrounded by a complex system of county roads and local trails.
