About this map

Canisteo Mine and a dense network of extraction sites dominate the landscape of the Mesabi Range in the early 1950s. The industrial character of the region is evident in the vast Tailings Ponds and Mine Dumps surrounding the settlements of Coleraine and Bovey. These towns are deeply integrated with the iron industry, positioned at the edge of the Trout Lake basin. Heavy infrastructure supports the mines, including the Great Northern Railway and the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railroad, which weave through the active mining pits.
