1955 Map of Lazear

USGS Topo · Published 1975

About this map

Rogers Mesa and Redlands Mesa dominate this mid-century landscape, where a sophisticated network of irrigation canals like the Highline Ditch and Fire Mountain Canal supported agricultural settlement on the high plateaus. The community center of Lazear sits at the junction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad and the North Fork Gunnison River. Local life in the 1950s is reflected in the presence of the Rogers Mesa Community House, the West Redlands Sch, and even a Drive-in Theater. To the south, the terrain drops dramatically into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, while industrial activity is noted at the Sulphur Mine and a Gravel Pit near Stingley Gulch.
