The Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation and Carson National Forest converge in this high-altitude landscape of Rio Arriba County. Surveyed in the mid-1990s, the terrain is defined by a series of mesas including Devils Mesa and La Jara Mesa, cut by deep drainages like Vaqueros Canyon and Leandro Canyon. The industrial character of the region is evident through an extensive network of pipelines and numerous gas wells, supported by the Amoco Compressor station.
