Lemay Island and the neighboring Crater Island anchor this survey of the Great Salt Lake Desert, where the terrain transitions from seasonal washes into the expansive salt flats. This environment is defined by intermittent hydrology, notably where Grouse Cr. terminates at the Grouse Creek Sinks. These sinks represent a critical drainage point for water flowing from the north, disappearing into the basin's floor before reaching the more prominent mountain ranges.
