About this map

The high-desert mining and ranching landscape of Esmeralda County unfolds across the Palmetto Mountains and into the broad Lida Valley. This late-1960s survey documents the small settlement of Lida at the canyon mouth, where a local Cem and Water Tank mark the presence of a community established by the area's mineral interests. The transition from the rugged western peaks down through Lida Canyon reveals the essential water infrastructure of the Great Basin, including Stewarts Spring and the Pipeline Reservoir. Evidence of industrial history is found in the remains of Stewarts Mill (Site) and a scattered Prospect, while a network of Jeep Trails provides the primary access through the desert terrain. To the northeast, the isolated peak of Mount Jackson stands as a prominent landmark overlooking the vast alluvial fan.
