The high desert landscape of the Palmetto Mountains and Sylvania Mountains dominates this 1950s survey of the California-Nevada border. Evidence of historic mining activity is scattered across the terrain, from the Sylvania Mine and Blue Dick Mine to numerous unnamed shafts and tunnels. Near the northern edge, the remnants of Palmetto are marked by ruins and a lone Grave, suggesting a settlement that had already begun to recede into the landscape.

Reliable water sources were clearly the lifeblood of this arid region, as evidenced by the dense concentration of named springs such as Pigeon Spring, Mammoth Springs, and Uncle Sam Spring. The map traces the rugged descent from Magruder Mtn down through Tule Canyon and Cucamungo Canyon, eventually touching the northern reaches of Death Valley and the Eureka Valley. The prominent Nevada California state line cuts through the center, separating Esmeralda and Inyo counties.
