Longdale Furnace serves as the focal point of this 2016 survey, situated along the Longdale Furnace Rd at the base of Mill Mtn. The landscape is dominated by the steep ridges of the George Washington National Forest and Jefferson National Forest, where the complex topography of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians is bisected by the Cowpasture River. This corridor reflects a deep-rooted transportation history, from the passage through Colemans Tunnel to the winding course of Simpson Cr and its various branches.
