The Uncompahgre National Forest dominates this landscape in Gunnison County, where a complex network of high-altitude waterways and alpine meadows defines the terrain. The Little Cimarron River and its various forks, including the E Fork Little Cimarron River, carve through the region alongside the Middle Blue Cr and W Fork Middle Blue Cr. These drainage patterns are punctuated by numerous small bodies of water, from the namesake Lost Lake and Mack Lake to the more uniquely named Stink Lake and Van Boxel Lakes.
