Lovells sits at the heart of this northern Michigan landscape, where the North Branch Au Sable River meanders through glacial terrain marked by numerous kettle lakes. The settlement serves as a focal point for a network of forest roads and trails, including Jackpine Plains Rd and Lovells Rd, which reflect the region's history of timber and recreation. Water features are prominent throughout the quadrangle, from the larger Shupac Lake and Little Shupac Lake to the headwaters of the W Br Big Cr and Middle Br Big Cr. A distinct Railroad Grade cutting across the terrain north of the town center points to the area's industrial past when logging railways were essential for moving timber. Genealogists will find the Lovells Cem located just west of the main cluster of buildings, while the surrounding landscape is defined by its transition across the Otsego and Crawford county line.
