Mackinaw sits at the heart of this central Illinois landscape, where the Mackinaw River and its tributaries carve a winding path through the prairie. The town's historic street grid is anchored by the Mackinaw Cem, while to the east, the planned residential community of Heritage Lake surrounds Maraldo Lake and its smaller counterpart, Spin Lake. The area's rural character is defined by a high density of early burial grounds, including the curiously named Hardscrabble Cem and the Stumbaugh Cem near the northern boundary.

Water and transportation dominate the geography, from the Sargent Slough wetlands to the southern reaches of the Little Mackinaw River. Multiple historic crossing points are identified, such as Rocky Ford Bridge, Amerman Bridge, and Porter Bridge, which link the various township roads.
